Long Form
Greg Smith is a singer-songwriter living in Savannah, GA. His latest album is “Redemption Road”; his eleventh album of original songs.
Music has always been at the center of Greg’s life. His musical influences reflect the lessons he’s learned along the way:
The Beatles: Harmonies and simple song construction
Frank Sinatra: To tell a story with your voice
Michael Stipe: To sing with conviction and passion
Chris Stapleton: Perseverance
Eric Clapton: To change with the times
Shawn Colvin: Clarity
Joe Walsh: Absolution
Lord Huron: Stylistic malleability
Greg has always played music, from when he could first reach a piano keyboard. As a kid, he borrowed his sister’s “Kay” guitar (from Sears!) and learned how to play basic chords, then listened to the radio and learned every Beatles song. He wrote his first song, “Midnight” on his 21st birthday and never looked back. Along with best friend Rich, he started recording their songs on an old tape machine, and eventually started a recording studio where he learned to play for and produce dozens of other artists.
Greg’s musical and production experience is broad. In addition to running a recording studio, over the years he also worked at: NPR (composing music and producing radio pieces); Lucasfilm and IMAX (he worked on film soundtracks and trained astronauts in filmmaking); SCAD and American University (taught film and music). He says the common link in all these jobs is storytelling. “I realized that songwriting is just storytelling, so I told stories. Write what you know, right?”
Greg spends most of his time these days composing and recording music in his Savannah studio, and playing his music on the road. “Of all the things I’ve been lucky enough to do with my life,” he says, “music has been the unifying and common factor. It’s always been there for me in bad times and the good, and never lets me down.”
