Green

She hears the ringing of the phone
She knows tonight she won’t be alone
A moment now is just enough
She knows it’s just the way of love
She feels it as she’s lying there
And now she’s got a reason to care
and now it’s
She knows it’s just the way of love

Outside, the world, they don’t see us
She makes a sound inside, it’s just
the way she feels, she can’t explain
She knows it’s just the way of pain
And if she’ll never lose the faith
She’ll see that it is worth the wait
and now it’s
She knows it’s just the way of love

The wind inside, the pounding rain
The passion there, it feels insane
A moment now is just enough
She knows it’s just the way of love
She knows it’s just the way of love
Of love, of love

Make Your Point

© Greg Smith

Once, I saw you as yourself
Now in the twilight, feeling something else
Come through the doorway, stand in the light of day
Don’t tell me stories, say what you came to say

Make your point
To me, I deserve at least that much
Make your point
And then go and leave me here as such

Crawl back inside my chair
Drive through the night and I end up nowhere
Sweet soft vibrations ringing in between my ears
Shatter the eardrum, too played out for tears

Make your point
To me, I deserve at least that much
Make your point
And then go and leave me here as such

No Forgiveness

© Greg Smith

There, in the midst of early rain
All in the name of pondering

Comes an emptiness and an echo of the possibilities
In the clouds of morning coffee she can see what’s meant to be
and be

Quarantine your sanity
Hide behind your vanity
She makes up little stories to explain away her tears
But the hurt is very real and only multiplies with years
and years

There will be no forgiveness, no pardon
No angels of mercy descending from on high
If only, he’d simply, say “I’m sorry”
No forgiveness, no pardon
A secondary life

Occupied is settling
‘til she lets him in again
And she finds that she is angry at every little thing
And the thing that gets inside her most is the sure and subtle sting
of love

So she lives another face
Settles in another place
But in unexpected moments he comes back into her mind
The addiction of emotion and the comfort of the strife
embraced

There will be no forgiveness, no pardon
No angels of mercy descending from on high
If only, he’d simply, say “I’m sorry”
No forgiveness, no pardon
Is how she lives her life

Two Lives

© Greg Smith

Two lives, one for the world to believe in
The other a world to deceive in
And each to itself

I walk, in and around the living
Breathing in their misgivings
In shadows and light

Feeling the sin, holding it in
What you’ve been told, as you grow older
Finding the truth in a touch in the deep of the night
Morals aside, will I abide?
Is it a lie when you don’t see it?
Gamble it all in a moment of earthly delight

I fall, justification is feeble
And some of time illegal
And some of it not

To live, resolving the choices we’ve taken
Your heart and soul to awaken
It balances out

Feeling the sin, holding it in
What you’ve been told, as you grow older
Finding the truth in a touch in the deep of the night
Morals aside, will I abide?
Is it a lie when you don’t feel it?
Gamble it all in a moment of earthly delight

Two lives, one for the world to believe in
The other a world to deceive in
And each to itself
And all is yourself

Little Girl Lost

© Greg Smith

Wake up with you, in my head
There’s no refuge here inside my bed
Maybe I’m cursed, this way
Think of all the things you had to say

Little girl lost
Playing at love, never thinking of the cost
Foolishly proud
All that a child’s understanding will allow

Blessed and pure, assured
In intentions, meaning, thought and word
Victim du jour, a tear
Lashing out to overcome your fears

Little girl lost
Playing at love, never thinking of the cost
Stridently proud
All that a child’s understanding will allow

I fall asleep, see myself
As I roam around inside my head
I face the truth, who I am
In the light of all the things she said

Little girl lost
Playing at love, never thinking of the cost
Stridently proud
All that a child’s understanding will allow

Don’t Say

© Greg Smith

Peeling away all the layers surrounding my heart
Always in life, love is the simplest part
Say what you mean (and mean what you say)
Make me believe you won’t deceive, you’ll never leave

Once in a while in the spaces between all the words
A glint in your eye shows a darker side of your world
Poisonous lips (what you say in your kiss)
Is it a lie, there as we lie, should I ask why?

Don’t say, don’t say
Don’t say you’re leaving me behind

Say what you mean (and mean what you say)
Make me believe you won’t deceive, you’ll never leave

Don’t say, don’t say
Don’t say you’re leaving me behind

Madelina

© Greg Smith and Rich Krents

Early in the morning sheets begin to rustle as the day begins
Wake up, get up, shirt and tie and coffee, on your way again
No sock, can’t stop, bus stop, crowd among the morning herd
Right there, blond hair, your stare, all without a single word

Madelina, I knew we’d be together from the start
Madelina, you found a way to open up my heart
You thought you’d never be the one
And now you think you’ve seen the sun
Madelina, Madelina

Full stop, your stop, snap to, out of your waking dream
Fall out, punch in, two cups, back at your desk again
Tune in, quotas, done deals, focus your thoughts and then
Into your mind you’ll find she’s come back again

Madelina, I knew we’d be together from the start
Madelina, you found a way to open up my heart
You thought you’d never be the one
And now you think you’ve seen the sun
Madelina, Madelina

Wake up and find yourself alone
It’s just the ringing of the phone
And they’re just faces on the wall
They’re telling you to make the call

Madelina, I knew we’d be together from the start
Madelina, you found a way to open up my heart
You thought you’d never be the one
And now you think you’ve seen the sun
Madelina, Madelina

World That I Don’t See

© Greg Smith

You and I are driving down the road to hell,
and I don’t know it
Curve ahead, the world that I don’t see

Sunny day and we are laughing at the world,
But who’s the joke on?
I don’t know, the world that I don’t see

Sitting on the porch you said that we would call our own
I never thought you’d leave me here and sitting all alone

A table full of artifacts and memories
Upon the altar
Sacrifice, the world that I don’t see

Break the bank on vintage wine and faux cuisine
M’anon l’addition
Au mon Dieu, the world that I don’t see.

All the time I’m holding you and planning out our lives
All the while inside your head you’re thinking of goodbye.

Sitting on the porch you said that we would call our own
I never thought you’d leave me here and sitting all alone

Sailing in the moonlight with the world at bay
A perfect moment
But not with me, the world that I don’t see.

You and I are driving down the road to hell,
and I don’t know it
Curve ahead, the world that I don’t see

The Last Great Love Affair

© Greg Smith

I hear your step echo in the hall
See your face staring from the wall
Lay me down, tracing the line of your brow
And wait, feeling you hold me now

In the light, picturing the moon
Feel your touch, breathing love’s perfume
All the while, pictures inside my head
I lay, searching my empty bed

The last great love affair
The last great love affair
The last great love affair
For me

Make a wish, pin it to a star
Through the night, wonder where you are
Feel the void, a hole in my aching heart
I smile, always the hardest part

of the day, go about my life
At the least, living to survive
Still I wait, hoping you’ll hear my prayer
And then, look for you everywhere

The last great love affair
The last great love affair
The last great love affair
For me

Next Time Around

© Greg Smith

Next time around there’ll be no more mistakes
Next time around I’ll do whatever it takes
to win your heart, make you stay
Next time around, you won’t go away

Please listen now and I will state my case
Please listen now and look into my face
and see the light in my eyes
Please listen now, and you won’t hear no lies

Once in your life you find a love that truer than the sky
Come with me now, together we will fly

Next time around there’ll be no more returns
Next time around I’ll listen and I’ll learn
to win your heart, make you stay
Next time around, you won’t go away
Next time around, you won’t go away

All We Ever Need

© Greg Smith

What if I told I could fly a hundred stories above the ground
Would you give me your hand and then
We would go sailing without a sound

And if I stood behind you arms outstretched and waiting for your fall
Would you release the fear inside and tumble like a waterfall
to me, what will be
If you’ll only come away with me

Come on and ride the night with me
Like two thieves in the night we’ll flee
Pull a memory long forgotten, make the most of what we’ve got then
All we’ll ever need is ‘tween our hearts.

And if I push the straightaway and hug the corners like a fool
And scream along until we stop, guided by un-resolving rules
Would you commit both here and now to take the strangest trip of all
to let me dip into your soul and give the very special part
to me, what will be
If you’d only come along with me

Come on and ride the night with me
Like two thieves in the night we’ll flee
Pull a memory long forgotten, make the most of what we’ve got then
All we’ll ever need is ‘tween our hearts

What if I told you I could fly and all you had to do was come
into a different state of time and change the way you see the world
We live, we die, so often bounded by the hurt that clips our wings
What if I told you we could fly, create a world apart for you
and me, what will be
If you’d only come along with me

Come on and ride the night with me
Like two thieves in the night we’ll flee
Pull a memory long forgotten, make the most of what we’ve got then
All we’ll ever need is ‘tween our hearts.

Come on and ride the night with me
Like two thieves on the run we’ll be
Pull a memory long forgotten, make the most of what we’ve got then
All we’ll ever need is ‘tween our hearts.

God’s Own Moon

© Greg Smith

Whisper now, confess to me all the fears you hold
Close at hand, and make a pact to face them with me
Hope and faith, they are but two sharp sides of God’s own knife
Take a chance and feel with me the kiss of life

Stand in the fire, to bring about truth
Never release all the passion of youth
You’ll never lie in the deep of the night
in the light
Of God’s own moon tonight

Fading hours, to dance among the day’s remaining light
Make a wish and keep it with me through the night
And through the night, efficient cutting beam regards us all
Laying bare the only one that I can’t lie to

Stand in the fire, to bring about truth
Never release all the passion of youth
You’ll never lie in the deep of the night
in the light
Of God’s own moon tonight

Speak to me and tell me of your heart
Trust in me the very sacred part
And feel with me the kiss of life

Rhyme or Reason

© Greg Smith

Make a noise, in the night
Can’t remember what you’re dreaming
At least you didn’t wake up screaming
Watch the light, on the wall
Shadows trying to tell you something
Past and present memories morphing

All the little moments in the night
Find myself avoiding all that’s light
Rhyme or reason doesn’t fit the bill
I’m not sure if daytime ever will

What if time made a sound?
Deafening as night approaches
Dreading dawn as it encroaches
Come alive, in the dark
Taste the sweat from fingertips
Crimson promise on your lips

All the little moments in the night
Find myself avoiding all that’s light
Rhyme or reason doesn’t fit the bill
I’m not sure if daytime ever will

Maybe you, maybe me
Traveling the dim forever
What the meaning of forever?

All the little moments in the night
Find myself avoiding all that’s light
Rhyme or reason doesn’t fit the bill
I’m not sure if daytime ever will

Lives of Desperation

© Greg Smith and Rich Krents

He turned the rusty Kwikset latch a thousand times before
The stubborn turn of deadbolt holding closed the door
Waking from a daydream it chilled him to the core
He picked his hat and coat up laying on the floor

It wasn’t very soon before he drifted back again
A pile of bills was waiting there on the desk inside his den
He didn’t see it coming, crossed the line and then
A polished marble marker is all that’s left of him

We live lives of desperation, living on the edge
We spend the week rehearsing them, on Sundays take the pledge
To do our best to live our lives, as daddy always said
Desperation

Early in the morning, it’s raining hard outside
Children going off to school, it’s mommy’s turn to drive
Good news in the mailbox doesn’t quite arrive
Another busy day ahead and time is passing by

Out behind the market, they’re growing rows of peas
It doesn’t pull in all that much, but it keeps ‘em off their knees
Routine in the household, you just think you see
You never really notice, it’s where you’ll always be

And the love we vowed between us
We had to put on hold
To keep the cupboard crowded
And sheltered from the cold

We live lives of desperation, living on the edge
We spend the week rehearsing them, on Sundays take the pledge
To do our best to live our lives, as daddy always said
Desperation
